Privacy Policy
StudyFish is an AI-assisted study app operated by Landon Fish (“StudyFish,” “we,” “us” or “our”). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use studyfish.app and the StudyFish app (the “Service”), how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. Questions? Email landonfish5@gmail.com.
1. Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account information: your email address and password. Your password is stored only as a secure hash by our sign-in provider; we never see it.
- Your sign-up agreement: when you created your account, your confirmation that you are 13 or older, and which version of our Terms of Service you accepted.
- Course information: courses, assignments, exams, due dates and topics you enter.
- Study materials you upload: for example notes, syllabi, slides and other documents.
- Your answers to practice questions and quizzes.
- Messages you send to Finn, our AI study assistant.
- Study availability and preferences: when and for how long you can study.
Information we create while you use StudyFish
- Concepts and topics identified in your materials.
- Practice questions generated for you, and your results (correct, incorrect or partial credit, and timing).
- Patterns in your mistakes and recurring misconceptions.
- Estimates of your mastery of each topic and your readiness for each exam.
- Your study plans: scheduled study sessions, which ones you completed, partly completed, skipped or moved, and a history of plan changes and the reasons for them.
- Finn’s replies to you.
- AI usage records: which AI feature was used, when, which AI model, how much processing it took, and whether it succeeded. These records never contain your materials, questions, answers or messages.
Information collected automatically
- Technical and log information: IP address, browser and device type, and the time of each request. Our hosting and sign-in providers record this to keep the Service running and secure.
- Your time zone, so your study plan uses the right days.
- Cookies and similar browser storage needed to keep you signed in and remember your preferences. See our Cookie Notice.
We use Vercel Web Analytics to count visits and see which pages are used, so we can improve StudyFish. It doesn’t use cookies, doesn’t follow you across other websites and doesn’t tell us who you are. It records the page address (with personal details removed), the site you came from, your country or region, and your browser, operating system and device type. We don’t use advertising trackers. We do not collect your precise location, your contacts or payment information.
2. How we use your information
- To run the Service: analyze your materials, generate and grade practice, estimate your mastery and readiness, build and adjust your study plan, and let Finn answer your questions.
- To run your account: create and secure it, sign you in, and send verification and password-reset emails.
- To keep StudyFish safe: prevent abuse, apply fair-use limits to AI features, investigate problems and protect our users.
- To keep StudyFish reliable: diagnose errors and monitor performance and AI costs, using usage records that don’t contain your content.
- To meet legal obligations: comply with the law, respond to lawful requests and enforce our Terms of Service.
- To contact you about the Service: account, security and important policy changes. We don’t send marketing email; if that ever changes, you’ll be able to unsubscribe at any time.
Your mastery and readiness estimates and your study plans are calculated by StudyFish’s own rules from your study activity. They are study aids only. They have no legal or academic effect, and your school never sees them unless you share them.
3. How we share your information
We share your information only in these situations.
Service providers. These companies process information on our behalf to run StudyFish:
| Provider | What they do for StudyFish | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, sign-in and file storage | All account and study information |
| OpenAI | AI features: reading your materials, generating and grading questions, analyzing mistakes, and Finn | Only the parts of your materials, questions, answers and messages needed for each request |
| Vercel | Hosts the website and app | Requests and technical logs (such as IP address and browser), and anonymous page-view statistics (Vercel Web Analytics) |
| Resend | Sends account emails | Your email address and the content of those emails |
Content is sent to OpenAI through its API. Under OpenAI’s API terms, content sent this way is not used to train OpenAI’s models by default, and may be kept for a limited time to monitor for abuse. You can read OpenAI’s privacy policy at openai.com/policies (opens in a new tab).
Legal and safety reasons. We may disclose information if the law requires it, or if we believe in good faith that it’s needed to protect the rights, property or safety of StudyFish, our users or the public.
If StudyFish changes hands. If StudyFish is sold, merged or transferred, your information may move to the new owner, who must continue to protect it as this policy describes. We’ll tell you before that happens.
With your permission. In any other case, only if you ask us to.
We do not sell your personal information, share it for targeted advertising, or give it to anyone for their own marketing.
4. How long we keep your information
- We keep your information while your account is open.
- When you delete your account or ask us to, we delete your account and study information within 30 days. Copies in backups are removed as those backups are replaced.
- AI usage records and your plan history are deleted together with your account.
- We may keep limited information longer when the law requires it, or to resolve disputes or prevent abuse.
5. How we protect your information
- Your information is separated by account inside the database itself, so other users cannot read it.
- Uploaded files are kept in private storage, never publicly accessible.
- Information is encrypted in transit (HTTPS), and stored answer data is additionally encrypted.
- Access to the systems that store your information is limited to the people who run StudyFish.
No system is perfectly secure. If a security incident affects your personal information, we will notify you as the law requires.
6. Your rights and choices
Wherever you live, you can ask us to:
- show you the personal information we hold about you;
- correct information that’s wrong;
- give you a copy of your information in a portable format;
- delete your account and your information.
Email landonfish5@gmail.com from the email address on your account. We may need to confirm your identity first. We respond within 30 days, and we never treat you differently for using these rights. You can also change most of your course and study information directly in the app.
Residents of some U.S. states, such as California, have additional privacy rights under state law. We extend the rights above to everyone. If we turn down a request, you can appeal by replying to our answer, and you may send a request through an authorized agent. Because we don’t sell or share personal information for advertising, there is nothing to opt out of; we treat Global Privacy Control signals as an opt-out anyway.
7. Do Not Track
Some browsers send a “Do Not Track” signal. StudyFish doesn’t track you across other websites, and it works the same whether or not this signal is turned on.
8. Children and teens
StudyFish is not for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If we learn that we have, we delete the account and its information. If you believe a child under 13 is using StudyFish, contact landonfish5@gmail.com.
Teens aged 13 to 17 may use StudyFish only with the permission of a parent or guardian. A parent or guardian can contact us to review or delete their teen’s information.
9. Where your information is stored
StudyFish is run from the United States. Your information is stored in Canada, in our database provider’s Canada Central region, and may be processed in other countries where our service providers operate. If you use StudyFish from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy. We’ll change the effective date at the top, and for important changes we’ll let you know by email or in the app before they take effect.
